Malachi means "my messenger". Because nothing else is mentioned of him in the Old Testament and because of the meaning of the word, some scholars have thought that Malachi may have been a pen name used by the prophet. This possibility is mentioned in an ancient Jewish tradition. The prophecy was probably written in the period between 450 and 425 B.C. This was the time of Nehemiah, about 100 years after the first exiles had returned from Babylon. The book reflects that era. The temple had been completed and sacrifices were being offered, but the priests were careless. The people doubted God and were intermarrying outside Israel. Judah was under a governor and Edom had been destroyed.

The prophet's style is unique in the Old Testament. He makes a statement and then asks a question growing out of that statement. In the answers to these questions Malachi sets forth the greater portion of his message.

The enthusiasm that marked the Jews' return to Jerusalem 100 years earlier was gone. They were discouraged. There was a drought and the crops were bad. They expected a golden age of prosperity but it had not dawned. Did not God care? Malachi answered these doubts: God is still on His throne! Look what He did to Edom. God deals with sin. Pay your tithes, obey Him, (

Malachi 3 : 7-11

7) Even from the days of your fathers' ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?

8) Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

9) Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

10) Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

11) And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.

 The Storehouse of the Lord

What constitutes the storehouse? In the old days of Israel, before the crucifixion of Christ, it was the treasury of the Temple continually replenished by charitable donations from the public of Judea. After the departure of Christ the storehouse was with groups that faithfully did the Lord's work. So also today, the storehouse is administered and maintained by those ministries and individuals who are active in the service of the Lord, it effectively is represented by the financial position of these ministries and individuals, by their ability to pay for the expenses associated with getting the work done. How do we know who is genuine of all those claiming to be in the service of the Lord? What is so peculiar about the real servants of the Lord? Here comes: They are the ones 'that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the church' (Mar.240.1)Just as  in the time of Israel's apostasy (Ezekiel-9) God's anger & fury will soon be poured out upon the denominations that are in various stages of apostasy. So much falsehood and deception is being preached that the truth cannot shine forth anymore. Religious bodies supposed to bring you closer to the Saviour, are actually (perhaps without intention) preparing you for the pit.

Another way to determine as to who would be a true servant of the Lord can be found in ISAIAH 8:20 which says: 'To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.' Trust them not if they say that we need not keep the 10-commandments anymore because they supposedly have been nailed to the cross. What most don't seem to understand is that only the ceremonial law was nailed to the cross, the part of the law that has become obsolete because the daily sacrifice at the temple had to stop after Christ, the lamb of God, was offered up at the cross once and for all.

So now, how then should we keep the commandments, with what attitude?

Mark 12:30 Love the Lord with all your heart. . . . which is directly connected with John 14:15 'If ye love me, keep my commandments'. It was Jesus who gave the decalog to Moses at Mt. Siani. Therefore it doesn't matter how much we think or say that we love Jesus, our love towards Him isn't worth anything unless we keep the 10-commandments because they are a transcript of His character. It is just the same for a girl who has a boyfriend. His professed love towards her isn't worth anything unless he loves her the way she wants to be loved. Jesus clearly said what He expects from us if we love Him ". . . keep my commandments". So then we keep the 10-commandments not to earn our way to heaven (all our righteousness is as filthy rags ISA. 64:6) but we keep them to show our love to Jesus.

Somebody once asked the question, "So if we're not keeping the commandments we're not loved by Christ?"  The answer was, "No, it's the other way around. If we don't keep the commandments it is an indication that we don't love the Lord."
